Google video about categories and tags
Matt Cutts from Google made a little Youtube video in which he discusses adding tags and categories from a search engine perspective. He says that Google can tell what your post is about, so tags aren’t needed. However, some aggregators use categories to show up in different feeds, so they are quite useful.
We build websites on Wordpress, which means search engines can easily find out what the crux of your website is. I’d like to reiterate that any posts that you write, must be written for your website visitors (and not search engines). If your visitors find tags and categories handy, say for navigating or searching for related content, then add them in a thoughtful way. Otherwise, you don’t need to ;-) Check out the video below.
Marketing via viral videos
Wildlife photographer Yvonne van Mey takes gorgeous wildlife and nature photos and to let more people become acquainted with her work, Nico Bulder (wildlife oil painter and Youtube fan) made a beautiful little video of her photos depicting the four seasons in the Veluwe (Dutch wildlife nature reserve).
Youtubers will be more than happy to share this video with their friends and family, and as a result Yvonne will become even more well known for her work. A great example of marketing through a viral video (watch the video below). Read the rest »

Portfolio: Varmlands Parkett Slipnings Service (SE)
Shortly after we redesigned their Dutch website (see Portfolio: Lensvelt Houten Vloeren), Sandra and Rudolf Lensvelt emigrated to Sweden. As soon as they were settled into their new surroundings, Sandra asked us to create a new website with the same look-and-feel as their Dutch site, only this time it had to be in Swedish.
Our first priority was to find a hosting company that spoke both Swedish and English, and then after Sandra had registered their website, we installed the content management system and database and replicated the design. Värmlands Parkett Slipnings Service is live. Read the rest »
Putting the cost of web design into perspective
In our opinion, the cost of our web design starter kit is very fair. We’ve kept the hours needed to design and build a website to a minimum, which suits most people’s needs.
There is room for a few changes, but if you want to try more options, like a different colour here or another font there, or perhaps change the layout again, then these changes will be charged for separately on an hourly basis. A fair method for everyone!
We’d also like you to consider the functionality that you’re getting with your website - a content management system (CMS) with full interactivity for your visitors. Read the rest »

How to copy & paste text without design conflicts
If you’re writing the content for your page in a word processing package like Open Office (open source software that’s free to use) or MS Word, then it’s likely that your text will inherit the design codes that come standard in that package. Or perhaps you’ve even changed the way your text looks to jazz it up a bit?
When you copy any text and paste it into your Wordpress page or post, it’s most likely that the underlying style codes will be copied too. These codes will override the style sheet that is set out in your web design and show each article with different fonts, colours and sizes. This could also happen when you copy and paste text from e-mails (or other sources).
So what if it’s completely different? Will the sky fall on my head? Read the rest »
How to add a Photo Gallery
Photo galleries are wonderful things for your website and can be used for many different purposes. For instance, if you’re busy with a project, you can show photographs of the before, during and after stages. Or you can show off your creativity (e.g. art, designs, photos, etc.) that has been categorised into appropriate galleries. But you can also use photo galleries to show off your products, with different angles and close-up shots. The choice is yours! Below is a step-by-step instruction on how to create and add your own photo galleries. Read the rest »
How to style your text
Part of our job as web designers is to tell internet browsers, like Internet Explorer or Firefox, which font, colour and text size your website should have. A couple of years ago, this used to be done by paragraph or by header. Sometimes styling was even applied on a word-for-word basis!
This took a long time to implement and if the client changed his/her mind, it was a nightmare. For example, if a font colour was to be changed from a deep red to a slightly brighter red, it would take forever. With larger websites, this could take days, if not weeks. Style sheets are the solution! Read the rest »
